The gorgeous covered bridge in Lucerne with a beautiful backdrop
Ry, Lisa and I spent a wonderful afternoon in Lucerne as a day trip from Zurich. The covered bridge, Lucerne’s main draw, is absolutely gorgeous! Just look at it, it’s like something drawn up in a fairy tale. After leisurely walking around the old town, we sat down to lunch at Pfistern right beside the river. You couldn’t get much better of a seat for the view and atmosphere! I was able to order the Chalbsgschnaatzlets <Lozarner Art> – sliced veal in a delicate mushroom cream sauce, served with golden brown roesti. The staff just had to make me a separate mushroom cream sauce to make it gluten free. It tasted really good and the staff was incredibly knowledgeable about which menu items were gluten free and what substitutions were required.

Ok onto the best part about Lucerne – the chocolate I stumbled upon. While walking around the old town I spotted a natural food shop. I was curious and wanted to take a look. I love walking around new food stores to see which types of gluten free products they sell. Well hold onto your hats – I found chocolate! There were several varieties of gluten free, soy free chocolate! Where to start I thought. I spoke with the lady working there for a while to get her opinions on the best brands. In the end I decided on three different types: a fair trade Swiss milk chocolate bar, a fair trade Swiss white chocolate with nougat bar, and an almond fig raw chocolate bar. I happily left the shop and immediately opened up the Schonenberger milk chocolate bar to try it. O-M-G! So creamy and velvety, it melted in my mouth. Lisa and Ry also tried it and said it was delicious. Sitting down to lunch I decided I should stock up on some more chocolate, so I walked back to the shop and bought three more bars of solid chocolate, two milk and one dark. On the train back to Zurich I tried the Swiss white chocolate with nougat. Again, I was overwhelmed with how good the chocolate was. If anyone knows a way to get Schonenberger chocolate in Canada please let me know! For now, I’m savouring my last two bars and am dreaming about chocolate. I can’t describe how happy it made me to be able to try Swiss chocolate in Switzerland.

Thanks for this post! My daughters and I are off to Lucerne on a spur-of-the-moment day trip so I didn’t have time for research. We like to pop by a bakery or patisserie for a treat when we go on day trips, but since getting diagnosed with celiac it’s been a bit challenging. I think I will pop by Schonenberger and let the girls pick some chocolate to enjoy on the train ride home and/or while walking around 🙂
