Girls’ Night at Sorrel – The Company Far Exceeded the Food

Earlier this week I had a romantic Winterlicious date night at Aria.  But on Friday night it was ladies’ night, no fellas allowed.  Word spread and it seemed like everyone was in the mood for a late night Winterlicious dinner at Sorrel followed by a night on the town.

It ended up being one of those nights where the company far exceeds the food.  My meal was pretty good, but by far nothing to write home about.  Thankfully the wine was delicious and flowing, and all night we laughed and had a great time catching up with amazing friends.

This Winterlicious fixe prix menu was $35, but I don’t think it was worth that much.  I had an insalata caprese to start followed by braised beef short ribs with roasted garlic mashed potatoes, sautéed French beans and thyme jus.  The meat was very tender and tasted good, but nothing else stood out.  For dessert I had crème brûlée.  Now ever since I went gluten free I have discovered how much I love crème brûlée, however I notice that it seems like many restaurants struggle with perfecting it.  Sorrel’s version just didn’t have a creamy enough texture – nor was it light and airy enough for me.  It still had great flavour, but sadly was not up to par.

I am thankful though that I am able to go out for Winterlicious with my girlfriends and safely eat gluten free.  Everything I ordered was naturally gluten free!

Another disappointment with Sorrel was that they started mopping the floor and bringing the garbage out in front of us while we were still eating dessert.  This is just poor customer service and is highly unacceptable in my opinion.  If you were supposed to be closed already, then don’t allow people to make a 9:00 p.m. reservation – I mean how quickly do you expect us to eat a three course sit down meal with a couple bottles of wine?  Big fail and turn off in my opinion.  It’s too bad for them because they had six up and coming young professionals that they could have impressed, but I sure won’t be returning…there are far better restaurants in Yorkville.

Thank goodness it was still a wonderful evening to hang out with girlfriends!
